On March 7, the fifth Steering Committee meeting of the SARD III “Support to Further Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Turkmenistan” project, which is funded by the European Union, was held at Yyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat.
The Steering Committee meeting was chaired by Kerim Saparov, Head of the Department of Agrarian Reforms and Study of the International Experience, Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.
The meeting was attended by Shamyrat Herremov, Head of the Agricultural Department, Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, Hojanazar Orazdurdyyev, Head of the Department of Standards and Certification of Food Products of the Sanitary Epidemiological Service of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, Tirkesh Annagulyyev, Senior Specialist of the Department of Financial Analysis of Agricultural Industry of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, Jemshit Taganov, Specialist of the International Relations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Silvia Pietropaolo, Programme Manager for Turkmenistan, the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan, Zora Gonczarow, Finance and Contracts Section, the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan, Ilya Ikonnikov, Key expert, Support and facilitation of the implementation of EU programs in Turkmenistan.
The attendees have highly appreciated the project performance with Arthur Russell, Team Leader of the SARD III Project, sharing his very positive impressions of the project thus far at the mid-point of implementation.
Farhat Orunov and Vepa Myalikgulyyev, Key Experts of the SARD III Project, introduced the project’s achievements, including ongoing technical assistance to dairy, greenhouse, potato-growing sectors, having already supported Turkmen farmers with dairy breed stock purchase, organized food safety trainings for experts and specialists of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, supported Turkmen enterprises with certification and implementation of the international food safety standards.
The participants of the Steering Committee gave their high rating to the actions taken by the project’s counterparts and discussed the plans.

The EU-funded project “Support to Further Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD III)” is supporting the Government of Turkmenistan in the achievement of national sector objectives for sustainable agriculture, rural development and institutional support to the rural agro sector. The third phase of SARD in Turkmenistan aims to increase productivity and competitiveness of the agro-food sector through activities that improve production, processing and marketing and to strengthen the capacity of supporting public sector agriculture institutions.
