Ashgabat, 30 August 2019: The European Union funded Project SARD III and UNDP Project “Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Sustainable Water Management in Turkmenistan” jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and State Committee for Water Management of Turkmenistan have organized a one-day seminar on water-saving irrigation methods in agriculture. The seminar was held at the capital’s Yyldyz Hotel. The goal of the seminar was to review and discuss the Spanish study tour experience, which was organized for water sector specialists from Turkmenistan on 15-19 July 2019.

The target group of the seminar consisted of specialists of the State Committee on Water Resources Management and other relevant agencies of the water sector in Turkmenistan from all velayats of the country, as well as researchers from the institute “Turkmensuwylymtaslama”.

During the workshop, UNDP project experts and “Turkmensuwylymtaslama” specialists spoke about Spanish experience in developing the water-saving irrigation system to contribute to climate change resilience. Furthermore, participants of the seminar discussed irrigation planning of crops in Turkmenistan, the effectiveness of various types of seepage-control lining for irrigation canals, and UNDP activities at the Green Polygon research site.

At the end of the seminar, all participants were engaged in discussions of the observations, conclusions and practical solutions drawn from the Spanish study tour experience. The participants have also discussed perspectives and possible practical application of the experience in accordance with the climatic conditions of Turkmenistan.

Funded by the European Union and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, the workshop  complements previous SARD III-organized activities aimed at supporting the Government of Turkmenistan in achieving national policy objectives for sustainable agriculture and rural development, as well as strengthening supporting institutions for the agro-food sector.  Read other stories about the work of SARD III project https://sard3tm.org/ .
